Alone together

Four things that stood out to me during my most important piece of research.

"Why does this matter? It matters to me because I think we're setting ourselves up for trouble -- trouble certainly in how we relate to each other, but also trouble in how we relate to ourselves and our capacity for self-reflection. We're getting used to a new way of being alone together. People want to be with each other, but also elsewhere -- connected to all the different places they want to be. People want to customize their lives. They want to go in and out of all the places they are because the thing that matters most to them is control over where they put their attention. So you want to go to that board meeting, but you only want to pay attention to the bits that interest you. And some people think that's a good thing. But you can end up hiding from each other, even as we're all constantly connected to each other."

"Human relationships are rich and they're messy and they're demanding. And we clean them up with technology. And when we do, one of the things that can happen is that we sacrifice conversation for mere connection. We short-change ourselves. And over time, we seem to forget this, or we seem to stop caring."

"And I believe it's because technology appeals to us most where we are most vulnerable. And we are vulnerable. We're lonely, but we're afraid of intimacy. And so from social networks to sociable robots, we're designing technologies that will give us the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship. We turn to technology to help us feel connected in ways we can comfortably control. But we're not so comfortable. We are not so much in control.

These days, those phones in our pockets are changing our minds and hearts because they offer us three gratifying fantasies. One, that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; two, that we will always be heard; and three, that we will never have to be alone. And that third idea, that we will never have to be alone, is central to changing our psyches. Because the moment that people are alone, even for a few seconds, they become anxious, they panic, they fidget, they reach for a device. Just think of people at a checkout line or at a red light. Being alone feels like a problem that needs to be solved. And so people try to solve it by connecting. But here, connection is more like a symptom than a cure. It expresses, but it doesn't solve, an underlying problem. But more than a symptom, constant connection is changing the way people think of themselves. It's shaping a new way of being."
"Technology is making a bid to redefine human connection -- how we care for each other, how we care for ourselves -- but it's also giving us the opportunity to affirm our values and our direction. I'm optimistic. We have everything we need to start. We have each other. And we have the greatest chance of success if we recognize our vulnerability. That we listen when technology says it will take something complicated and promises something simpler."

Blog 19: Senior Project and ESLRs

1.  What ESLR have you excelled in most in your senior project?

  • Effective learner
2.  Please explain why you think you have excelled in this ESLR.

  • From what I have learned by my senior project and others, I understand two things: senior project is either career or interest orientated. With this being said, social media networking is both a interest of mine as well as a possible future after school. Therefore, despite not being able to find a mentor, I have excelled in being an effective learner by taking responsibility for my own learning. I continue to look for mentorship, as well as research and take pride in my topic. And in addition to research and mentorship, I love sharing my topic with others and seek creative ways to engage others with my topic.
3.  Provide evidence from your senior project to support your claim (evidence is a photo of something you are doing, photo of something you made, etc).

  • My independent component (1) is an example of taking responsibility of my learning by seeking resources (CalPoly Sociology class, Dr. Loo) to further my knowledge and understanding for social media networking and society itself.

Blog 18: 2-Hour Meeting Answer #3

1.  What is your essential question?
  • How has social media most affected the ways Americans interact?

2.  What is your third answer to your essential question (write your third answer in a complete sentence)?
  • Social media has made it easier for Americans to adopt second lives.

3.  What are three details to support or justify your second answer (details are examples or facts)?
  • For example, anonymity and virtual discussion eliminates the pressures of face-to-face interaction. In fact, it is apparent in a recently story written by Anita Felicelli called "Stepping out from behind the email", where the author met and married her husband through email. Although anonymity was not a huge factor, Felicelli makes a point to explain that because of the perfection and the way that only a correspondent to anyone's online interaction usually sees the best of you online.
  • In addition to this story, a MTV docudrama, created by Nev Schulman, Ariel Schulman, and Max Joseph, called Catfish also captures the way social media affected Americans. By helping online couples meet for the first time, it gives life to what (author) described in her story, as well as the potential conflicting roles on people and their life online.
  • In fact, after interviewing CalPoly Sociologist professor, Dr. Dennis Loo, Dr. Loo also described the affects of social media and our identified by explaining that it is not in our DNA to have our private lives in public. By using examples from political sex scandals and public scandals in general, Dr. Loo helped me understand this point by distinguishing between social and personal identities. (Social identities are no longer private, while personal is private.)

4.  What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question?
  • Loo, Dennis. Personal interview. 6 Feb. 2013.

5.  What do you plan to study next and why?

  • I plan to study the infrastructure of the current social media giants in America (Facebook and Twitter) and "dead" giants that once dominated the platform (MySpace, Geocities, etc.)  By understanding what different ideologies, policies, and what they have to offer to the user, I can start to understand how and why we use these in a market perspective.

Blog 16: 2-Hour House Meeting Answer #2

1.  How has social media most affected the way Americans interact?

2. Social media has affected the way Americans interact with other Americans both positively and negatively, by allowing us to be more connected and communicative.

3.
·         For example, it is much easier today than it was during the pre-social internet to connect and communicate with person A and B time efficiently and over long distances
·         In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, two thirds of adults use social media websites, while
·         For example, we are able to possess different identities in the virtual world, therefore being able to connect and communicate with others better.

4.  What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question? The Pew Research Center: Social Networking and our Lives, TED Discussions: Ethan Zuckerman: Listening to Global Voices.

5. I plan to continue my study of answer 2 by researching specifically the sociological aspects of American-to-American interaction, in contrast to answer 1 that was focusing on American-to-Foreign interaction. Specifically, I hope to find more reports such as Social Media and our lives, that emphasis on digital social media, and not broadcast social media.

Blog 10: Senior Project Update

  • What are you currently doing in your independent component?
For my independent component, I am going to create a Twitter and Instagram for iPoly's drama club that will be advised by Mr. Hogan. I will fill in a required amount of tweets and pictures per meeting, record all meetings, and socialize with the club.
  • What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project?  The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November.  Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.
Rebecca, MacKinnon. "Let's take Back the Internet!" TED: Ideas worth spreading. TED, July 2011. Web. 25 Sept. 2012.

This article provided me insight on the direction I should go with my topic since it is very huge and endless. MacKinnon's lecture on internet freedom inspired me to talk about the social change, issues, and aspects of social media and the implications of the future with social media networking and use.
  • Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did.  For example, a photo of something you working on for your independent component or your notes from the video you watched.
I presented this business plan to Mr. Hogan and plan to create a twitter and instagram account next week after our meeting together during lunch.

Blog 9: Working EQ and Possible Answers

"How do we make best of the use of social media?"

My working EQ I used during my presentation was: How do we make best of the use of social media? I really like this question for multiple reasons, however I came upon this question when my most important source, Clay Shirky, asked the same concluding question after a discussion on TED. I feel that not only this question is an opened end question and may be interpreted multiple ways, it is a vague, but concise question that requires much thought and understanding.

I liked my EQ so much that I do not want to revise it at this time. If anything, presenting my presentation to my class helped me build a concrete foundation of this question to help my understanding for the future.

But, at this point, what are my current answers to my working EQ? Well, as stated before, it really is an open ended question that has multiple answers and interpretations. Because of the nature of this question, it's a great relief, to me anyway, that there is no right or wrong answer... just answers that are more right than wrong and vice versa.

My answers at this time to my EQ are:
  1. Use social media as a tool to connect with one another — not to drift away.
  2. Use social media as a tool to communicate with one another — to share expressions, ideas, and art.
  3. Use social media freely and do not promote the censorship or manipulation of this new period of communication.
  4. Use social media to promote democracy, not encourage hatred.

Blog 2: Topic Choice

I began to consider what my senior topic should be during my sophomore year when I realized that time was running out. I struggled to find something I was passionate about since I juggled with numerous of ideas that were not at all in the same spectrum. All I knew was I wanted my senior project to be career orientated and something I would not get bored of. Before I knew it, Junior year was over and I was still unsure what I should dedicate myself to.

Then, it hit me like one of those sparks of inspiration during a writer's block: what about parades? I have no clue where this idea came from, yet it was one of the most brilliant sudden lightbulbs I ever had. It was almost summer, so without wasting time I researched about the parade industry and discovered a whole new world of possibilities. I wanted to combine the two passions of mine together: politics and art.

My topic:

  • With this in mind, I decided my topic will be Parades. Parades offer basically a huge hover over the little aspects I wanted to include: public demonstrations, marches, and floats. After I researched a little bit, I found out the term 'parades' is a word open for discussion because there are different uses of these public events. This enables me with tools to execute my topic without being constrained.

Why?

  • I'd like to believe I am artistically creative. In my groups, I was always the one making up the physical product of our project because I always have innovative ideas. However... I also wanted to stand up for something, because I want to actually give back to the world and stand up against issues that matter to me. Parades is a happy medium between these two things, art and politics, because with parades you can connect to the public politically in ways that work. Believe it or not, people would pay more attention to a crowd of people marching in protest than politicians on television.

And how would all this help me accomplish connecting this topic with the ESLRs?
  • As an iPoly citizen I plan to use this project to showcase the valuable lesson I gained from iPoly which is to think. I learned to think at iPoly and my topic will connect this because not the average worker can produce a float or organize a parade. It takes a thinker and believer as my father said.
  • As an effective communicator I plan to use my topic to communicate my art and values together. Communication goes further than words, I believe that through art and community, change could be brought about to issues in the future. Parades require their volunteers and workers to communicate effectively because it is a team effort that creates the product of an event.
  • As an effective learner I plan to learn from my weaknesses as an artist and sketch everyday. I also want to learn about the history of parades and its impact on society from entertainment to politics.
  • As an effective user of technology I plan to impress my advisers and create a physical product of a float. Parades will give me experience in media mixed arts.
