Alone together

Four things that stood out to me during my most important piece of research.

"Why does this matter? It matters to me because I think we're setting ourselves up for trouble -- trouble certainly in how we relate to each other, but also trouble in how we relate to ourselves and our capacity for self-reflection. We're getting used to a new way of being alone together. People want to be with each other, but also elsewhere -- connected to all the different places they want to be. People want to customize their lives. They want to go in and out of all the places they are because the thing that matters most to them is control over where they put their attention. So you want to go to that board meeting, but you only want to pay attention to the bits that interest you. And some people think that's a good thing. But you can end up hiding from each other, even as we're all constantly connected to each other."

"Human relationships are rich and they're messy and they're demanding. And we clean them up with technology. And when we do, one of the things that can happen is that we sacrifice conversation for mere connection. We short-change ourselves. And over time, we seem to forget this, or we seem to stop caring."

"And I believe it's because technology appeals to us most where we are most vulnerable. And we are vulnerable. We're lonely, but we're afraid of intimacy. And so from social networks to sociable robots, we're designing technologies that will give us the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship. We turn to technology to help us feel connected in ways we can comfortably control. But we're not so comfortable. We are not so much in control.

These days, those phones in our pockets are changing our minds and hearts because they offer us three gratifying fantasies. One, that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; two, that we will always be heard; and three, that we will never have to be alone. And that third idea, that we will never have to be alone, is central to changing our psyches. Because the moment that people are alone, even for a few seconds, they become anxious, they panic, they fidget, they reach for a device. Just think of people at a checkout line or at a red light. Being alone feels like a problem that needs to be solved. And so people try to solve it by connecting. But here, connection is more like a symptom than a cure. It expresses, but it doesn't solve, an underlying problem. But more than a symptom, constant connection is changing the way people think of themselves. It's shaping a new way of being."
"Technology is making a bid to redefine human connection -- how we care for each other, how we care for ourselves -- but it's also giving us the opportunity to affirm our values and our direction. I'm optimistic. We have everything we need to start. We have each other. And we have the greatest chance of success if we recognize our vulnerability. That we listen when technology says it will take something complicated and promises something simpler."

SOCIAL MEDIA: JOURNALISM SPINS & ENDS

I currently travel this:

To attend my mentorship at LA Youth. Although it's quite a distance, and I absolutely loathe driving in traffic with people who don't know how to drive, I am connecting social media to journalism. I mean, to me:

Journalism is defined as - the written expression, that may be virtual/print/digital/broadcasted/aired, to capture the spirit and pain of events, humans, and ideas.

While, social media is defined as - the often digital, that may be video/AV/written/socialnetworks/etc, media rich interaction that combines the consumers and creators together in a virtual environment.

Despite my understanding on these definitions, I lack the breadth and depth of understanding  how a social giant becomes as big as Facebook. In future research, I plan to read and understand:
  • Andreas M. Kaplan, Michael Haenlein, Users of the world, unite! The challenges and opportunities of Social Media, Business Horizons, Volume 53, Issue 1, January–February 2010, Pages 59-68, ISSN 0007-6813, 10.1016/j.bushor.2009.09.003.
  • Ruthann Weaver Lariscy, Elizabeth Johnson Avery, Kaye D. Sweetser, Pauline Howes, An examination of the role of online social media in journalists’ source mix, Public Relations Review, Volume 35, Issue 3, September 2009, Pages 314-316, ISSN 0363-8111, 10.1016/j.pubrev.2009.05.008

Well, that's embarrassing...

I'm labeled as a blogger, yet I rarely blog. As a matter of fact, what is even a bit more funnier, my topic is social media networking, yet I don't have internet access at home.

But, minus the dramatic introduction and suspense, I'd like to update my progress since the middle of summer.

June: Despair! Chaos. I have no idea what my topic is.

July: Ten hours of hard labor (not really, but...) is spent on the morning of the fourth of July at Hacienda Heights. Here, I realize that in fact parade managing is a great breath of fresh air for my tingling creative senses. I mean, I had loads of  fun doing crafty stuff and surrounding myself with people who wanted to help out their community. Although it was amazing and a great feeling, something was missing, and I couldn't pick my finger on it...

August: Sitting around still trying to put my finger on it...

Then, September happened: and, I quickly realized what the missing counterpart to my initial topic was - research. Here, was that very sad point in my senior project pursuit when I realized I was neither passionate nor determined to search the four corners of the world about public demonstrations that inspire activism. But then, school happened and that all changed when I discovered
  • Our internet was censored
  • Our bandwidth was slow... with no printer!
  • & finally, that it really aggravated me that senior students could not be treated like young adults and be granted basic internet to use as a tool in our education
So, with the help of the darling Ortega.. it just happened. My topic including parades and foo-foo pretty stuff altered into social media networking. It was so surprising. yet inspiring to me that this random topic was now at my feet. It was actually one of the best decisions I made, because it resulted in something I never thought senior project would do: discover my passion.

Until I realized I needed a mentor. Yaaaaaaay.

With blood, sweat, and tears, it took nearly two months to get a break through. It came in the news of a phone call to LA Youth:
Amanda Riddle
5967 West 3rd Street #301
Los Angeles, CA 90036
(323) 938-9194

Needless to say, my reaction was a bit like this:

I completely agree that I could had definitely filmed a reaction video,

Now, as October rolls by, I have successfully completed four hours of mentorship with LA Youth and plan on attending Saturdays until I graduate. You see, I know a lot has happened since the middle of summer, including:
  • Citing 25 sources for my Research Check
  • Getting an AE (A for non ipoly students) on my 10 minute presentation
  • Finding a topic for my science fair project (the correlation between the economics of a country and the level of censorship in that given country)
  • Grasping the basic fundamentals of the internet and social media
Today can mark week one of my weekly update on my project. Sure, I'm about eight plus weeks behind, but it's never to late I guess.

And, on one concluding note, here's the truth on how many people I contacted for mentorship prior to getting a place at LA (which, is a very scenic hour and a half of drive from my house on the10 ^_^)
